Leadwork and chimneys, done watertight

Flashings, valleys, back gutters, chimney repointing, re-flaunching and reduction work. The junctions are where roofs leak, around the chimney, along the abutment, down the valley, and lead is still the material that does that job best when it is cut, dressed and fixed correctly. We do our own leadwork rather than bodging it with sealant and hoping.

What’s included

Every leadwork or chimney job, covered.

Flashings & Abutments

Cover flashings, step flashings and soakers cut and dressed properly, chased into the joint and pointed, not smeared with mastic.

Valleys & Back Gutters

Lead and GRP valleys renewed with the correct laps and width, and back gutters behind chimneys rebuilt so snow and leaves stop causing damp.

Chimney Repairs

Repointing, re-flaunching, new pots and cowls, and rebuilding weathered brickwork before it becomes a structural job.

Chimney Reductions & Removals

Redundant stacks reduced below the roofline or removed, tiled over cleanly so you would never know one was there.

Questions

Asked and answered.

Damp is showing beside my chimney breast. What is it?

Nine times out of ten it is the chimney: failed flashing, a cracked flaunching letting water down the flue, or brickwork so weathered it is soaking water through. We check all three from the roof rather than guessing from the loft, and fix the one that is actually failing.

Do you replace lead with lead?

Where the detail calls for it, yes, in the correct code for the job. On some details a modern GRP valley or a composite flashing does the job well and resists theft. We will tell you the options and price both where both make sense.

My chimney is not used any more. Should I take it down?

If it is sound, capping and ventilating it is cheapest and keeps the look of the house. If it is leaning, spalling or costing money every few winters, reducing it below the roofline and tiling over is often the sensible end to the problem. Both are jobs we do regularly.

What is flaunching?

The mortar crown around the pots on top of the stack. When it cracks, water gets into the stack and frost blows it apart from the inside, and eventually pots loosen. Re-flaunching while the damage is small is a modest job; leaving it makes it a rebuild.

Can you do the brickwork side as well?

Yes, and it is one advantage of using us: the roofing and the building trade are in-house, so a chimney that needs courses rebuilding gets a bricklayer and a roofer in the same visit rather than two firms blaming each other.
